Speaking at the meeting, Minister Luong Tam Quang underlined that the deployment of Vietnamese forces, including the police force, to UN peacekeeping missions is always a priority of the Government of Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in particular, demonstrating Vietnam’s obligations and responsibilities towards international peace and security, contributing to protecting the fundamental principles of the UN Charter while enhancing Vietnam's political trust in the UN and international partners.

The Vietnamese official released that the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam has sent one police officer to the UN Department of Peace Operations and 12 others to the UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei, including 4 policewomen.

The Minister also revealed that 20 Vietnamese police officers have recently passed the UN Assessment for Mission Service of Individual Police Officers and will be deployed to UN peacekeeping missions in the coming time.

At the meeting, Minister Luong Tam Quang proposed that the UN Under-Secretary-General continue to promote and facilitate cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and UN agencies.

The Minister suggested that the UN functional agencies provide the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam with equipment and facilities and support the Vietnamese side in building capacity of police officers, while maintaining delegation exchange between the two sides as well as ensuring security and safety for Vietnamese police and military personnel at UN peacekeeping missions.

Minister Luong Tam Quang also called for the establishment of a communication line between the Police Division under the UN Department of Peace Operations and the Standing Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam.

He underscored the need to set up mechanisms of cooperation and information exchange between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and UN Police.

The Vietnamese official hoped that UN functional agencies will further support the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in pre-deployment training as well as capacity assessment for peacekeeping police officers before their deployment to UN peacekeeping missions.

Speaking at the meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix highly appreciated Vietnam’s contributions, especially that of Vietnamese peacekeeping police officers, to UN peacekeeping operations, .

The UN Under-Secretary-General hoped that the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam will actively participate in activities of the UN peacekeeping police forces, especially when transnational crimes are increasingly complicated, and conflict hotspots are emerging in the world, badly affecting people’s lives worldwide.

The UN official affirmed that the UN will create favorable conditions for Vietnamese police officers to fulfill their assigned tasks at UN peacekeeping missions, support the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in training and building capacity of police officers as well as further enhance expert-level delegation exchange to share information and experience in the field of peacekeeping.
