Locals and tourists crowd Temple of Literature for calligraphic works

Thousands of Hanoians and tourist have been flocking to the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu- Quoc Tu Giam) in Hanoi to ask for calligraphy.
The 2019 Spring Calligraphy Festival kicked off on January 29 in Van Mieu- Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature) in Hanoi, providing a space to reflect on ancient culture and feudalism.
Since then, thousands of Hanoians and tourist have been flocking to the Van Lake to ask for calligraphy. Calligraphy expresses the Vietnamese people’s respect for knowledge.
People ask for words of wisdom in Vietnamese, Chinese and Han-Nom (Chinese Han and Vietnamese Nom ideographic) scripts from elderly scholars.
Characters such as happiness, success, health, wealth and luck are among the most sought after.
Calligraphic words are displayed at home in the hope of enjoying a lucky, happy, healthy, and peaceful year. Calligraphers select appropriate words based on a person’s purpose and age.
Dozens of outstanding calligraphy works are being showcased at an exhibition, contributing to improving the local people’s knowledge of calligraphy arts.
Crowds gathered at Ho Van to visit the calligraphy exhibition and request personalised brushworks from the calligraphers.
Police officers ensures security and order outside the Van Lake in Temple of Literature.
Children, students, and young adults usually ask for words of Wisdom, Intelligence, Understanding, and Achievement to bring greater for knowledge and success in exams. Older people usually ask for words of Peace, Happiness, Morality, and Heartedness to bring for a year full of peace and family happiness.
