PSNews - The Traditional Wrestling Festival on February 14 was kicked off in Sinh Village, Phu Mau Commune, Phu Vang District, Thua Thien Hue Province, attracting the participation of many local people and visitors.

This year-festival drew the participation of 100 wrestlers. According to Nguyen Van Trai, Deputy Chairman of Phu Mau Commune People's Committee, the Sinh Village Wrestling Festival dates back to dynasty of Nguyen lords, with the aim of selecting strong and elite men to protect the country.
Since the 15th century, villagers of Sinh have held the event on the occasion of the Lunar New Year to wish for luck, good health and bumper crops. The wrestling event is also an opportunity to choose the best wrestlers for the locality.
This is a traditional culture activity full of martial spirits of local people. Before beginning the competition, the wrestlers must bow before the village’s older residents.

The event takes place amid a large sand ground. The wrestlers must not strike with dangerous blows because of martial spirits. To beat their opponents, wrestlers must put their enemy’s back on the floor.

Traditionally the event’s strongest wrestlers are honoured whilst all those competing show both courage and confidence. Sinh Village Wrestling Festival is one of the most famous festivals in Central Vietnam.
