Lai Chau hit by devastating flash floods

Flash floods swept through the districts of Nam Nhun and Muong Te, causing many deaths, the destruction of property, and severe damage to subsidiary crops in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.

Two flash floods swept through Hua Bum commune in Nam Nhun district and Bum Nua commune in Muong Te district on June 24.

According to statistics released by local authorities, the devastation left four dead whilst many others remain missing. The afternoon of June 24 saw rescue forces discover the body of a victim of the flash floods
The strong floods also cause seven homes belonging to local residents to be swept away.
Muong Te district was hit particularly hard by the extreme weather and was temporarily isolated as floods and heavy rain caused serious landslides to block National Highway 4H.
Floods also caused severe damage to a number of irrigation works throughout the locality
Several communal roads were submerged by flooding, causing eight hamlets in Pa Ve commune of Muong Te district to be inaccessible
The flooding forced the residents of 27 local houses, mostly located in the hamlets of Na Hu in Bum Nua commune, to be evacuated to safer places
A number of homes belonging to local residents were totally ruined by the flooding.
Following the seriousness of the flooding, local rescue forces are trying to support the recovery efforts of local residents
The suddenness of the flooding led to difficulties in salvaging the belongings of residents
Despite the heavy flooding, some residents attempted to pick up debris from their property
Aside from losses to human life and damage to property, the flooding hit 50 hectares of rice and subsidiary crops.

On the afternoon of June 24 relevant agencies along with Tong Thanh Hai, Vice Chairman of Lai Chau People’s Committee, rushed to the scene to direct recovery efforts.

The local electricity system is under repair in order to stabilize the lives of local residents.
