Vietnam loses $1.7b due to natural disasters in 2016

PSNews-The year of 2016 witnessed continuous extreme weather phenomena such as floods, droughts and cyclones, causing a great loss of $1.7 billion, according to the National Hydro - Meteorological Centre.

Various provinces of Vietnam were severely impacted by natural disasters

Tornadoes occurred in various places such as Binh Phuoc, Nghe An, Soc Trang, Gia Lai, Quang Binh, Quang Tri. Particularly, 2 tornadoes appeared in Con Co island on June 5th.

4 in 10 storms appearing in the South China Sea (East Sea) directly hit Vietnam’s lands, particularly the first hurricane (appeared on July 27 and 28) with its complex developments and directions, resulted in 28 deaths and a loss of over VND 3,500 billion.

2016 has been considered a year of extensive floods, happening in various provinces. Notably, floods in Central provinces caused at least 65 deaths and some VND 7,190 billion of loss. Droughts and soil salinity spreading in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands provinces due to El Nino left an estimated loss of VND 7.900 billion (about $350 million).
