Vietnam proud of being responsible UN member: Vietnamese PM

PSNews – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the statement at a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership to the United Nations (UN) in Hanoi on October 17.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh and Leaders of various relevant ministries and branches, representatives of foreign diplomatic agencies, international organizations and UN agencies  in Hanoi.

Addressing the event, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc stressed, that Vietnam became the 149th member of the UN on September 20, 1977 marked the international community’s recognition of an independent, free and unified State of Vietnam, starting the process of renovation and international integration.

Vietnam is proud of having been a responsible member of the UN, and strived to contribute positively to the three pillars of peace - security, development and human rights over the past 40 years, in spite of its difficulties. Vietnam has been elected to several key UN agencies. The Vietnam - UN Development Cooperation Framework has been seen as a successful model of cooperation.

Regarding the UN support over the past time, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized that UN agencies are Vietnam’s close friends who have effectively support the country full of difficulties in the 1970s and 1980s and also in the following years.

The PM also took the chance to extend his gratitude for valuable supports rendered by the UN and the international community during the 4 decades, and to sincerely thank friends and international experts who wholeheartedly supported Vietnam and worked with Vietnamese officials in various fields for a growing relationship between Vietnam and the UN.

Prime Minister Phuc considered the UN a “ray of hope” to promote unity, and join nations’ efforts and creativity to overcome challenges, strive for sustainable development and bring prosperity, happiness to all people on earth.

In order to successfully fulfill the objectives of cooperation and development, the Prime Minister underscored a need for peace and stability, which is particularly significant for the Asia - Pacific, home to complex issues challenging regional and international peace and stability. On such basis, the PM affirmed that Vietnam strongly supported the call of the UN Secretary-General that 2017 was a year for peace. He also expressed his wish over the UN's greater role in maintaining international peace and security, preventing and settling disputes through peaceful means on the basis of respect for the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

The PM noted that multilateral dialogues and promoting effective cooperation with the UN are top priorities in Vietnam’s foreign policies and international integration.

Vietnam is committed to fulfilling its role as a responsible member of various agencies under the UN, while promoting its participation in UN peacekeeping operations (PKO); striving to implement the Sustainable Development Agenda, COP21 Agreement on Responding to Climate Change.

The PM also expressed his hope that the UN, development partners and international friends continue to support Vietnam to successfully implement the cause of renovation, sustainable development and prosperity for all people.

Within the framework of the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Mr Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator in Viet Nam, cut the ribbon for the photo exhibition on the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam - UN relations.
