Crime rate is under control: Minister of Public Security

PSNews – In a report to the National Assembly on the results of the prevention and fight against crime and law violations in 2016, Senior Lieutenant General To Lam, Member of the Politburo, Minister of Public Security said the crime rate has been curbed, achieving the targets set by the National Assembly.

The Minister stated, under the timely and sound direction of the Government and thanks to the close collaboration of ministries, branches and police forces at all level, and support of the people in the fight against criminals nationwide, crime rate is now under control.

Accordingly, 70,430 cases were prosecuted with more than 102,000 arrestees. The number of cases reduced by 2.79% while the number of arrestees was down by 6.1%.

Regarding offences of social order, the MPS prosecuted more than 42,000 cases with about 64,000 arrestees, down by 12% and 13%, respectively. The numbers of murders, rapes and robberies fell 8.11%, 27.56%, and 15.22%, respectively.

Regarding economic crime and corruption, investigation agencies have prosecuted 2,055 cases with 1,284 arrestees for their faults in economic management; 102 corruption cases with 374 arrestees; and 24 cases with 62 arrestees for abusing their positions and power. 

However, the Minister of Public Security also stressed, the situation of the law violations and crimes remains complex.

Results of investigations also showed that criminals in economic and corruption cases use increasingly cunning and sophisticated tricks, particularly crimes involved in the field of finance, banking, land management, investment and tax.

He said that the situation of crime in the country even see large challenges with the appearance of foreign criminals, organized crime, technology crime and cyber crime. Meanwhile, fight against illegal sports gambling, drugs related crimes, trade frauds and environmental offences and traffic violations is facing many difficulties.

According to the report, the origin of most crimes is economic difficulty and unemployment, which trigger social problems. In addition,  a number of citizens, especially adolescents are degrading in terms of morals . 

The complexity of the world situation is also believed to affect social security, social order and safety in the country.

2016 has seen many important events of the country, especially the election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA) and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2016-2020 tenure.

A majority of the Public Security Forces have been mobilized to protect the events, leaving a negative impact on prevention and fight against law violations and crimes.
