Nearly 4,200 prisoners to be amnestied before lunar New Year

PSNews-The Presidential Office officially announced the State President’s Decision on 2016 Amnesty.

The Presidential Office in association with the Ministry of Public Security, the People’s Supreme Court, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Governmental Office and other relevant agencies held a press conference on November 30 to announce the Decision on Amnesty 2016 and answered questions from the press and media relating to conditions to amnesty prisoners in 2016.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Giang Son, Deputy Chief of the Presidential Office stressed that the 2016 Amnesty Decision repeats the clemency policy of the Party, the State and humanitarian tradition of Vietnam for those who went a wrong way, providing them an opportunity to repent of their sins and self-improve to become useful citizens of the society.

Mr. Son emphasized that the special amnesty drive is conducted without discrimination or restriction against any kinds of prisoners.

4,180 prisoners have sufficient conditions for this amnesty drive will be released, according to Decision No.2533/QĐ-CTN, issued on November 29, 2016.

Addressing at the conference, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thanh, Deputy Minister of the MPS and other leaders of the People’s Supreme Court and Ministry of Foreign Affairs took turns to respond to questions by reporters from various news agencies.

Particularly, 14 foreigners will be released, including 09 Chinese, 01 South Korean, 03 Laos and 01 Australian. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had informed related representative agencies to prepare necessary documents.

Prisoners granted amnesty include 490 committing narcotics-related crimes, 144 related to economic, 01 infringing national security.
