In the future, the Cat Bi International Airport will include passenger terminal T2, a parking lot in front of the new terminal and a cargo terminal, as well as a number of projects to renovate and expand existing aircraft parking areas.
The terminal will have a capacity of 5 million passengers per year and be able to expand to 10 million passengers per year. The auxiliary works for the terminal include the synchronous infrastructure system and traffic system to connect with terminal T1.
According to a representative of ACV, the number of passengers, journeys and cargo through Cat Bi International Airport has exceeded the capacity of its design. Besides, traffic connections between Hai Phong and neighbouring localities will increase demands in travelling by air in the coming time. Therefore, upgrades and expansions of the airport’s infrastructure are urgently needed.
Cat Bi is an international air gateway that plays a key role in the socio-economic development strategy of Hai Phong and the country’s northern coastal region. The airport’s current terminal was inaugurated in May 2016.
Over the past years, the number of passengers in Cat Bi international Airport has increased significantly. In the period from 2013 to 2017, the average number of passengers rose by 26.8 per cent and the cargo output increased by 20 per cent.
Only in 2017, the airport welcomed 2.3 million passengers, nearly 29 per cent higher than in 2016. This figure is expected to continue to grow steadily at a high level in the coming years as airlines have plans to expand the flight network and increase the frequency of existing routes to and from Cat Bi.
