PSNews-The Traditional Lunar New Year, known as Tet, is coming in two months and various fruit farm owners in Mekong Delta are now making unique shapes for their fruits to meet an increasing demand of customers for Tet five-fruit offerings.

Gourd-shaped grapefruit, gold-bar watermelon supplies limited

Farmers of Nam Roi grapefruit orchards (Phu Huu Commune, Chau Thanh, Hau Giang) are working hard and expecting that they will earn much in Tet as the fruit’s price has been stably high. They especially hope their gourd-shaped grapefruits could bring them fortunes.

However, according to many gardeners, due tobad weather, especially storm No.1, numerous grapefruit trees flowered about a month earlier than normal. This causes much trouble to many gardeners as their grapefruits will ripen a long time before Tet, and they will not have the fruit for the Tet market.

As a result, many farmer shave to chop down and plant new trees, which may take at least 3 years to fruit. In order to meet the demand for shaped grapefruit supplies of the Tet market, grapefruit shapers in this locality had to seek cooperation with grapefruit farmers in other provinces such as Tra Vinh, Vinh Long and Soc Trang to create various shapes for grapefruits, said Vo Trung Thanh, Chairman of the Shaped Fruit Club (Phu Tri A Hamlet, Phu Tan commune, Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang).

It is difficult to predict the price because it depends on the cost of production and market’s demand. Production costs are said to be high, he added.
