The construction was started in 2014 with a total cost of VND 60 billion ($2.6 million). The Nha Trang Observatory will be one of the two observatories built within the framework of the Vietnam National Space Center project (VNSC) run by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
As the Nha Trang Observatory has almost been erected, it has become the first-ever astronomical observatory in Vietnam. It will have two main functions: for scientific research, and for tourism.
Located on rocky Hon Chong, off Nha Trang city, the observatory has a 0.5 meter diameter astronomical telescope, a 60-seat cosmic projection room, and a 200 sqm exhibition room.
According to Prof. Nguyen Thi Hoang Anh, Deputy Head of the Nha Trang Observatory, the telescope is a reflective optical one made by Marcon, an Italian company renowned for astronomical equipment, which has a camera and a spectrum analyzer with high resolution in a wide wave range.
The Nha Trang Observatory is to conduct basic research on optical astrophysics, popularize cosmic science among the public, provide support for training, teaching, and improving human resources in astrophysics, and collaborate with relevant organizations in Vietnam and abroad.
Nha Trang authorities have decided to add the observatory to city tours as a new destination for tourists when visiting the city.
