Vietnam break swimming record at SEA Games 31

Vietnam broke a SEA Games record in men's 4x200m freestyle relay to beat Malaysia and Singapore and win one of their 17 gold medals on May 17.

The four-member Vietnamese team finished in 7 minutes and 16.31 second in win the country's first gold medal in the category in SEA Games' history. They broke the previous record of 7 minute 17,88 second.

Swimmers Nguyen Huu Kim Son, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Hoang Quy Phuoc and Tran Hung Nguyen competed with their rivals from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia in this event.

Malaysia won silver medal by finishing in 7 minutes 19.75 second, while the Singapore team who included Olympic medalist Joseph Schooling won a bronze medal in 7 minutes 21.49 second.

On the same day, with a result of 4 minutes and 18.10 seconds, Tran Hung Nguyen not only sustained his top position in the men’s 400m medley since the last Games held in 2019 but also broke the previous Games record of 4 minutes and 20.65 seconds set by himself.

Also in this category, the 16-year-old Nguyen Quang Thuan, younger brother of famous swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, secured a silver when finishing his race in 4 minutes and 22.46 seconds.

In the men’s 100m freestyle, Luong Jeremie Loic Nino of Vietnam with 49.57 seconds brought home a silver while his teammate Hoang Quy Phuoc only came fourth. The gold medallist was Zheng Wen Qah from Singapore.

Vietnam’s Huynh Thi My Tien pocketed a silver with 8 minutes and 51.73 seconds in the women’s 800m freestyle, following Gan Ching Hwee of Singapore with 8 minutes and 42.60 seconds.

This is the second time at SEA Games 31, Vietnamese swimmers have defeated Rio 2016 Olympic champion Joseph Schooling of Singapore and his teammates in the relay event.

After the 4th day of  competition, the Vietnamese swimming team pocketed 7 gold, 9 silver and one bronze medal. At SEA Games 31, the team set a target of wining of from six to eight gold medals.
