Prior to the Dak Nong Geological Park, two other parks in Ha Giang and Cao Bang had been recognized by the UNESCO as global geoparks. To date, 147 parks located in 41 countries have been granted this title.

Dak Nong Geopark was established in 2015. In recent years, relevant ministries and agencies, including the UNESCO National Committee of Vietnam, the Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and especially the People's Committee of Dak Nong Province, together with national and international experts, have collaborated and studied the outstanding geological values, geomorphology and biodiversity of Dak Nong Geopark. Based on the results of studies, the host country submitted the dossiers to the UNESCO in November, 2018.

Consisting of about 65 geological and geomorphological heritage sites, including a system of nearly 50 caves with a total length of more than 10,000 meters, craters, waterfalls ..., Dak Nong Geopark has for a long time been renowned for its diverse tropical forest ecosystems, unique values of biodiversity, and various unique cultural, geological and natural features as well as traces of prehistoric humans.
