Heavy rain hurts farmers in Mekong Delta

In Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province, various fields suffered severe damages. In response to the heavy rains and potential losses, local farmers had decided to harvest their rice crops sooner than scheduled, despite higher costs of labor.
Paddy fields in Can Tho were also badly affected by the unusual rain.

According to Nguyen Van Cung, a farmer in Thot Not district, Can Tho, over 25% of his family’s rice cultivation area was damaged. It is also difficult to harvest the rice now as it has not yet been ripe, and harvesters are not available in the beginning of the year, he added.
Besides the damage in local rice cultivation, numerous shrimp, salt and vegetable farms in the region were hit by unusual rainfalls.
Unseasonal rains due to a weak La Nina phenomenon will continue to happen in the South of Vietnam until the end of February before the weather could become normal, according to M.A Nguyen Huu Thien, Independent Expert on Climate Change and Ecology.
