Natural disasters cause annual loss of VND 20,000 billion to Vietnam

PSNews-In the last 20 years, natural disasters have resulted in about 10,800 people dead or missing and caused an annual loss of 1-1.5% of GDP (VND 20,000 billion).

The information was released at the workshop “Natural disasters, prevention and response” organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in collaboration with the Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Traffic and Tourism on October 3.

Tran Quang Hoai, Director of the General Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (MARD), said that Vietnam is one of the countries which suffers the most severe consequences by natural disasters and climate change. Natural disasters, especially storms, floods and droughts, have increased in intensity and frequency, causing great losses to human lives and the economy.

In 2016 only, natural disasters caused a total loss of nearly VND 40,000 billion. In the last 20 years, about 10,800 people have died or gone missing as a result of natural disasters.

Delegates at the seminar proposed various solutions to the long-lasting shortcomings in preventing and responding to natural disasters, and underscored the need for active participation and a coordination mechanism ofvarious branches at all levels and localities.
