Origin of strange-colored water in Hue’s sea identified
PSNews-The results of monitoring and analyzing seawater along Thua Thien Hue province’s coastal area by the provincial authorities show that the phenomenon of yellow water in Chan May port area, Loc Vinh commune, Phu Loc district, has resulted from the development of algae species, called Gonyaulax polygramma.
On the afternoon of March 30, the results of monitoring of the seawater quality at Canh Duong and Chan May port area were officially announced by the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Accordingly, the cause of the phenomenon of yellowish water in the sea was scientifically explained.

Earlier, on March 23and 24, locals in Loc Vinh commune became surprised when spotting yellow stripes with long lasting floating membranes in the sea of Chan May port.
This phenomenon made some aquatic species lethargic on the water, and itched people when exposed to seawater.
After receiving the information, the local authorities of Loc Vinh commune reported to competent agencies. At the same time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of ThuaThien-Hue visited the area to collect samples for more analysis.
However, most of the monitored parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonium, total phenol, total chromium, cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Manganese (Mn), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) ... are within the limits of the National Technical Regulations of sea water quality.
Particularly, the concentration of Gonyaulax polygramma at Canh Duong beach area and Chan May port was from 8,918,000 to 14,006,670 cells per liter.
According to the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the strong development of the algae caused yellow streaks and bad smell, and the reduced concentration of oxygen in water led to deaths of several marine species.
