Fans across Vietnam storm streets to celebrate victory SEA Games football gold

Football fans nationwide hit the streets in massive numbers, recreating scenes of frenzied pre-pandemic jubilation after Vietnam beat Thailand to claim the SEA Games 31 gold on May 22.

U23 Vietnam (in red) won 1-0 over U23 Thailand (in yellow) in the final match of the SEA Games 31 men’s football at the My Dinh stadium in Hanoi on May 22. The only goal scored from a header of striker Nham Manh Dung (17) in the 83rd minute brought the gold medal to the host team.

After the match ended, the streets in Hanoi's centre were crowded with people cheering and waving flags.

At a square in the city’s Old Quarter, thousands of people gathered around a screen set up by authorities to watch the game.

They were not to be disappointed and the stadium, Hanoi and other cities including Ho Chi Minh erupted as the home team held on for a narrow, nervy win.

Earlier, Vietnam's women's team also won gold on May 19 for a prized footballing double for the hosts.
