The current ship visit seeks to enhance maritime cooperation between the two Navies. This will further bolster the strong bonds of friendship between the two countries and contribute to security and stability in the region and the world at large.

Bilateral relations between India and Vietnam have been traditionally strong with cultural, religious and economic ties dating back to 2nd Century AD. India-Vietnam relations have been strengthened in recent years due to a vibrant economic relationship and growing convergence on political, regional and security issues.

In 2016, during the official visit of Indian Prime Minister, HE Mr Narendra Modi to Vietnam, the relations between the two countries were elevated to the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister of Vietnam, HE Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited India in January this year as a guest of Honour at the Republic Day Parade 2018 and to take part in the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit.

This was followed by a State visit by late President of Vietnam, HE Mr Tran Dai Quang to India in March 2018.  HE Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman, Defence Minister of India  visited Vietnam in Jun 2018.  HE Mrs Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister visited Vietnam in Aug 2018 for the Joint Commission Meeting and inauguration of the Indian Ocean Conference.

There are a number of bilateral visits by senior defence officers from both sides planned later this year.  The high profile visits signify the growing momentum of the bilateral relationship.
