Irish President visits Vietnam’s province of Quang Tri

PSNews-Continuing his state-level visit to Vietnam, H.E Michael D.Higgins, Irish President and his spouse paid a working visit to Quang Tri on November 9 and 10.

The Irish President and his wife visited the Mine Action Visitor Center in the Kid First Village, RENEW Project (Removing explosive remnants of the war in Vietnam).

During the visit, leaders of Quang Tri held talks with Mr. Charles Flanagan, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Chinh, Chairman of the Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee, briefed the guests on the province’s socio-economic situation. He also expressed his hope for further supports from Ireland to achieve their 2017-2020 development goals. The provincial chairman also hoped the Irish Government to continue their assistance in the province’s mountainous areas home to ethnic minorities, increase other programmes to surmount war’s consequences in the country, especially the ongoing demining projects by the British Organizations of MAG and other programmes to support mine victims by the RENEW.

Quang Tri also called on Irish enterprises to invest much in local construction, tourism, services, sea food processing.

Mr. Charles Flanagan recognized achievements recently attained by the province in cooperation with the Irish Embassy in Vietnam to carry out assistance programmes to support people in Quang Tri. The Irish Government and people will continue to support Vietnam in general and Quang Tri in particular in the 135 Programme, in poverty reduction and demining projects.

The Irish Government commits to support Quang Tri provincial officials with overseas training courses to improve their competency and to promote knowledge and experience sharing in climate change, international law on the disabled and international cooperation. The Irish Government’s assistance to Quang Tri reached $2.3m (VND 60m).
