The National Assembly Standing Committee made the proposal to the ongoing first session of the legislature in Hanoi on July 24.

The NA deputies held group discussions and are to cast a secret ballot on July 24.

The new State President will take the oath of office as soon as the results are announced.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc was elected as State President to succeed Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the last session of the 14th National Assembly three months ago.

Before taking office as Head of State, Phuc had led the 14th Government for nearly five years.

Hailing from Quang Nam province, central Vietnam, the 67-year-old politician has been elected to the Political Bureau, Party Central Committee, and National Assembly in many terms.

He had kept several key positions such as Deputy Secretary of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee, and Minister-Chairman of the Government Office before being elected as Deputy Prime Minister in 2011 and Prime Minister in 2016.

At the first session of the 14th National Assembly, Phuc was elected as Prime Minister for the 2016-2021 term.

He was then elected State President of Vietnam at the 11th session of the 14th National Assembly in April 2021.

He is currently a member of the Political Bureau, Party Central Committee and National Assembly for 2021-2026.
