A total of 468 lawmakers present at the current session voted in favour of Phuc, who was relieved from the post of Prime Minister last week following the successful completion of his duty during the 2016-2021 tenure.

“Under the sacred golden star red flag of the Fatherland, in front of the National Assembly and fellow voters nationwide, I, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, will be loyal to the Fatherland, people, and the Constitution, and will work hard to fulfil tasks assigned by the Party, State, and people,” Phuc stated during his oath.

He expressed his belief that under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Vietnam will weather any storm and make greater achievements in the cause of national construction, defence and development, as well as international integration.

Phuc will continue in the role of the 11th President of Vietnam since 1945, whilst he has also become the first incumbent PM to be elected to the post of State President.

The 65-year-old leader hailing from Quang Nam province, central Vietnam, had held important positions in the State apparatus including Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial administration, Minister and Chairman of the Government Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Prime Minister before being elected as State President.

The 14th National Assembly is holding its last session in Hanoi to complete personnel work in the State apparatus before voters will go to the polls next month to elect a new legislature for the 2021-2026 tenure.
