Chinh made the request at a reception in Hanoi on September 5 for John Kerry, US special presidential envoy for climate.

Vietnam is in need of technology transfer and financial assistance, in addition to developing human resources, perfecting institutions and sharing experiences, he said.

The PM proposed that development partners support and transfer renewable energy technology, to help Vietnam build and develop a renewable energy equipment manufacturing industry, and at the same time develop a map to accurately assess the potential of solar and wind power across all regions.

Vietnam needs preferential loans to develop the renewable energy industry, build a power transmission centre, create carbon capture technology and form a mechanism for renewable energy to be sold at a reasonable price, said Chinh.

He asked Kerry who he described as a close friend of Vietnam to help strengthen resilience for communities in the Mekong Delta that are vulnerable to climate change.

For his part, special presidential envoy John Kerry acknowledged Chinh’s proposals and affirmed that the US would continue to strengthen cooperation and support developing countries, including Vietnam, in responding to climate change, especially in the development of clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, smart water and recourse management in the ecosystem.

Both host and guest expressed their elation the positive development of the comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

Vietnam hopes that the US will continue to demonstrate its strong commitment to supporting ASEAN’s centrality, the ASEAN-US Strategic Partnership, and the Mekong-US Partnership, said PM Chinh.

Meanwhile, special envoy Kerry assured PM Chinh that the US consistently attaches importance to the Comprehensive Partnership with Vietnam.

The US supports Vietnam in playing an active and substantive role in the region and in addressing international issues, including climate change, he said.
