The MPS has learned and exchanged experience with many countries with experience in using mounted police forces to ensure security and order.
The former horse-mounted squad was assigned with the task of border patrol in remote and mountainous areas, said Minister Lam. Horses are proved to be effective in transportation, regardless of difficult terrains and conditions, and can carry heavy loads.
Thanks to supports from the Government, the MPS managed to establish the Horse-Mounted Police Squad. The MPS also received effective assistance from countries with horse-mounted forces. In many developed countries, the police still keep using horses in patrolling and maintaining public order in urban areas.
The MPS has planed to use domestic horse breeds, such as the Bac Ha horse, as well as horses from mountainous areas, which can be familiar with the terrain. The mounted police will serve national ceremonies, state-level receptions as well as patrol in difficult terrains and busy traffic and fight against crime and patrol.
Minister Lam added that the Horse-Mounted Police Squad will continue to train horses for other tasks.
