MPS promotes cooperation with Australian Border Force

PSNews - Member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang hosted a meeting with Commissioner of the Australian Border Force Michael Outram in May in Hanoi.

Welcoming Commissioner Michael Outram to Vietnam, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang stated that the visit was a follow-up cooperation activity between the two agencies after the official visit of Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Australia in early March, during which the two countries officially upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Affirming that Australia is always in the list of Vietnam’s cooperation priorities, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang revealed that the two sides’ functional agencies had been preparing for the first Vietnam – Australia Ministerial Dialogue on Security in late 2024, an important event to promote cooperation between the two sides in the fields of security and law enforcement.

Besides, the two sides had been effectively implementing adopted cooperation documents including the MOU on immigration information exchange, the agreement on mutual legal assistance, the agreement on extradition, the agreement on transfer of sentenced persons, the MOU on fighting transnational crime and promoting police cooperation, contributing to providing a strong legal basis for cooperation between the two sides.

In addition, during the 5th Vietnam – Australia Meeting of Senior Immigration Consultants took place in Australia on April 17th, the two sides reached a consensus on organizing training programs for immigration officers on immigration assessment, passport checking and anti-impersonation within the framework of the Australian Airport Liaison Officer program.

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang suggested that the two sides continue to effectively implement the signed cooperation documents, enhanced high-level exchange and expert-level exchange as well as exchanged information on transnational crimes and illegal immigration, while sharing practical experiences of immigration management and technology application.

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang also recommended that the two agencies should promote public education on illegal immigration prevention, while drafting a bilateral agreement on cybersecurity and anti-cybercrime, contributing to deepening the cooperation between the two sides.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang hoped that the Australian partner would assist the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in training Vietnamese immigration officers in foreign languages and capacity-building, information analysis and processing skills as well as illegal immigration prevention, while supporting modern equipment and facilities for Vietnamese immigration agencies.

Sincerely thanking Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang for the meeting, Commissioner Michael Outram underscored that the Australian Border Force had effectively cooperated with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security over the past time and the two sides had witnessed several positive results in the work of ensuring border security, preventing and fighting illegal immigration and transnational crimes.

Appreciating Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang’s ideas, Commissioner Michael Outram affirmed that the the Australian Border Force would further promote cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security in the field of law enforcement, especially in preventing and fighting illegal immigration.
