Minister of Public Security General To Lam signed a decision on April 11 to promote Lieutenant Thai Ngo Hieu to Captain for his brave action of saving four people from drowning in Vung Tau beach.
Captain Hieu, born in 1989, is a police officer of the Fire and Rescue Police Office under the Dong Nai Provincial Police Department.
Earlier on April 10, Hieu was with his family at Phuoc Tinh beach (in Long Dien district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) when he heard people from a distance calling for help. Hieu immediately saw some people reaching their hands repeatedly in the sea. He immediately swam toward them and pulled four of them to the shore. He then performed CPR for the victims to revive them.
Right after that, Hieu heard that there was still one more victim in sea so he joined a local rescue team in another life-saving effort, but the person did not survive.
As a skilled fire police officer, Hieu has taken part in 39 successful rescue operations, saved 11 lives, found 37 victims' bodies, and supported more than 50 flooded households to move to safe places.
On the morning of the same day, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc praised Captain Thai Ngo Hieu for his bravery. Meanwhile, the Minister of Public Security decided to promote Officer Hieu from Lieutenant to Captain.
