Vietnam, US strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement

The Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in coordination with the United States (US) Department of State and US law enforcement agencies organized the first-ever Vietnam – US Law Enforcement and Security Dialogue, on July 31st, in Hanoi.

Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung, Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics & Law Enforcement Affairs of the US Department of State Shelby Smith-Wilson and US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper co-chaired the dialogue.

The Vietnamese delegation attending the dialogue included representatives from the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme People's Procuracy and the General Department of Customs.

On the US side, the dialogue saw the presence of representatives from the Department of State, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior and the US Embassy in Vietnam.

During the dialogue, both sides expressed delight at the recent comprehensive and substantial developments in the Vietnam – US relationship which were displayed in all bilateral, regional and global mechanisms, on the basis of the principle of respecting each other's national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political systems.

On that basis, the cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and US law enforcement agencies also developed in depth and achieved numerous positive results.

Accordingly, the two sides regularly exchanged messages and strategic information and coordinated in crime prevention and control as well as training and capacity building for law enforcers.

Those positive results served as an important part of the overall picture of the bilateral relationship between the two countries, and also demonstrated deep and comprehensive cooperation between the two sides.

In the framework of the dialogue, delegates of the two sides discussed and evaluated results of the bilateral cooperation over the past time, and proposed approaches to effectively enhance sector-level cooperation in the coming time, so as to realize commitments of the two countries' top leaders within the framework of the Vietnam – US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
