Pa Then fire jumping festival recognized as national intangible cultural heritage

PSNews - The “Nhay lua” (fire jumping) festival of the Pa Then ethnic minority people usually takes place during leisure time when all the farm work is completed.

The festival starts from the 16th day of the 10th lunar month of the previous year and lasts until the 15th day of the first lunar month of the following year.

Pa Then people believe that fire is a supreme deity that is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.

Therefore, fire jumping is a ritual that symbolizes the deities descending to bathe in the water and bless the village with good health, harmonious weather, and bountiful harvests.

In September, the fire jumping ritual of the Pa Then ethnic minority in Hong Quang Commune, Lam Binh District in the northern province of Tuyen Quang has been enlisted as Vietnam's intangible heritage for the second time.

The fire-jumping ritual performed by Pa Then community in Tan Bac Commune, Quang Binh District in the northern province of Ha Giang receive the title on December, 2012.

The practice of fire jumping aims to dispel fear and weakness.

The fire dance is only for men who are strong, skilled, and agile, and each usually dances for a few minutes.
