Police raided a house in the province’s outlying Nam Thuong Village, which was home to the ring of six, and seized more than VND1.8 billion (US$79,000) in cash along with various expensive items.

The ring was headed by Truong Minh Quang, a 32-year-old local, and Tran Phan Manh Hung, a 33-year-old resident of Hue City. The two used to organise gambles and online betting on European football matches, worth over VND100 billion ($4.4 million).

To operate the ring, Quang had bought the websites allowing online gambling.

Police said the ring was well-organised and it took a lot of effort by local policemen to keep a watch on the members. Police had to make use of the live telecast of a match at the English Premier League between Manchester City and Chelsea last weekend to raid the ring.

They are now expanding the investigation. This is the largest case of a gambling racket to be busted in the province.
