Deputy Minister of Public Security Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang received Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) in charge of peacekeeping Jean-Pierre Lacroix, on the afternoon of November 26, in Hanoi.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang emphasized that sending forces, including the police force, to UN peacekeeping Missions is a high priority of the Government of Vietnam and the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam so as to demonstrate the country’s obligations and responsibility in maintaining international peace and security, protecting the basic principles of the UN Charter, and enhancing Vietnam's political trust with the UN and its partners.

Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang informed Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix that the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam sent 4 officers in 2022 for the first time to participate in UN peacekeeping operations, of whom 1 officer now works as a transnational crime/organized crime specialist at the Police Department, United Nations Peace Operations Department (New York, USA) and 3 other officers work at the South Sudan UN Peacekeeping Mission.

At present, all the police officers of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security have adapted to working in the UN environment, but Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang still suggested that the UN Deputy Secretary-General and UN specialized agencies continue to create favorable conditions for their livings, accommodations, and working conditions, as well as ensure security and safety for the Vietnamese police officers while working at the UN headquarters and the South Sudan Mission.

Sincerely thanking Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang for the meeting, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix highly appreciated Viet Nam's active and effective participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

He said, he believes that with the capability and professionalism of Vietnam's peacekeeping force, the country will continue to expand its participation in UN peacekeeping mission and therefore to make further contribution to international peace and security.

He also affirmed that the UN will strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in UN peacekeeping spheres.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations said that during his recent visit to the United Nations Interim Security Mission in the Abyei Region (UNISFA), he received a positive evaluation from the mission commander and local leaders on Vietnam's UN peacekeeping force in the Abyei area, which contributed positively to the general task accomplishment of UNISFA and bringing a better life to local people.
